Again this year we attended the Annual Conference of the Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA), which was hosted by Georgetown University, in Washington, D.C. on the theme “Capabilities on the Move: Mobility and Aspirations” on 10th-13th September.

During the conference we presented the results of our several research activities on our core areas of expertise, such as wellbeing of children and people with disabilities, local development, participation and impact evaluation.
In particular, we presented the following papers:
– “The evaluation of complex development programs: applying the capability approach through mixed-methods” (Mario Biggeri and Andrea Ferrannini)
– “Caste, Class & Gender among youths in rural Andhra Pradesh: A capability approach perspective” (Caterina Arciprete and Mario Biggeri)
– “Health Conditions & Household Extra Needs: The Case of Acquired Brain Injuries” (Mario Biggeri, Federico Ciani, Martina Menon and Federico Perali)
– “Understanding the determinants of children’s capabilities & the role of educational systems through the STEHD framework” (Mario Biggeri)

Moreover, the book “Human Development & the Capability Approach – The role of Participation & Empowerment edited by Mario Biggeri together with Alexandre Apsan Frediani e David Clark was presented in a special session during the conference.
The book will be released in 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan.

Finally, our researchers are coordinators of two Thematic Groups of the Association – the TG on Participatory Methods (Andrea Ferrannini) and the TG on Children and Youth (Mario Biggeri and Caterina Arciprete) – due to our internationally recognised expertise on these topics.
