On September 24th Mario Biggeri, Scientific Director of ARCO, participated as a panelist to the open session “Towards a Champions League for Transition to Sustainability” organized by the DG for Research & Innovation of the European Commission for the  2020 European Research and Innovation Days.

In 2019, R&I Days session on “Re-defining prosperity’’ took stock of existing definitions and indicators regarding sustainability and stimulated new thinking about economics. This year, DG R&I and its Director-General Jean Eric Paquet are ready to present a conceptual framework to rank the EU Member States – and 45 other countries – on how they perform across the four dimensions of transition towards sustainability: economic, social, environmental and governance. The session aims at collecting feedback from experts and audience on this particular framework.

R&I Days – Europe Research and Innovation Days

European Research and Innovation Days is the European Commission’s annual flagship Research and Innovation event, bringing together policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs and the public to debate and shape the future of research and innovation in Europe and beyond. This year, it is a fully virtual event, with the Policy conference and the Science is Wonderful! online exhibition.

By creating connections between cutting-edge scientific research and the most pressing challenges of a generation, the European Research and Innovation Days represent a unique opportunity to join the conversation and enact real change. The value of this virtual event comes from building connections and encouraging fruitful exchange between diverse participants, in order to arrive at creative and impactful solutions.

Framing R&I for transformative change towards sustainable development in the European Union

The objective of this exploratory study is to analyse the nexus between the current debate on R&I policy and the notion and measurement of sustainable development in the uncertain scenario of our present and future times. Through a state-of-the-art review of the up-to-date academic literature and policy debate on both sustainable development and R&I, this study intends discussing to what extent and how R&I policy in the post-COVID scenario can represent a leverage for transformative change towards sustainable development. In particular, it provides theoretical arguments and policy recommendations to foster a roadmap for a new approach on R&I policies at European level.
